I am pretty much sure that you have heard the above line somewhere or must have come across a social media post claiming the same.
Even though this news seems like a piece of very fascinating news it might not be true. So, we decided to cross-verify the truth behind this famous news that every social media account is posting nowadays.
College Degree
If you try to job hunt for companies, most of them ask you for a college degree. This also explains that a college degree is very much important when you are looking to get a job even in a startup level companies or a big MNCs, however, there is a trend going on the internet that you don’t need a college degree to get into companies like Google Microsoft Tesla and IBM. Various articles also claim that these companies value your talent and skills more than a college degree.
Due to the spread of such news, many of the students who are studying in Colleges and Universities decided not to pursue college and instead decided to go with the specific skills-related courses and Bootcamps. Many social media posts also claim that all the millionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs are college dropouts degree is not that much important according to them. However, we decided to do the research behind this post and try to bring the truth in front of you.
How we did the research?
1) For the research we hunt various job opportunities from the various companies and analyze their job description about the post that whether they are required to have a degree or not.
2) We emailed almost all of the websites that claim that you don’t need a college degree asking them for proof or screenshots of the job descriptions.
3) We also tried to go on the official website of these job portal websites and hunt that career portal to look for the same that whether you need a college degree to get a job or not.
4) most of the articles were written without any solid proofs so we decided to email the author and asking them based on what they have written the articles, and none of them ever replied
5) lastly we decided to spoke to the senior associates and ask them do they hire people without a college degree or not.

Starting from the very first company is our day-to-day favorite search engine, email, and service provider and the dream company for all software engineers “Google”. As mention in the above strategy of research first, we hunt down all the jobs present in India and the US region of Google office. We decided to gather the job requirements and verify that whether you need a college degree or not.
The results were shocking, in a total of this research on 37 job positions from a different role most of them belonging to a software engineer or position related to software or business and few other managerial at an associate-level position. Every single one of them requires you to have a college degree!
So for now you can say that if you want to get a job at Google you need a college degree or equivalent experience!
The other scenario: While everything mention in about paragraph is true there is also another side of this thing. Google conducts various competitive programming exams, and also says that if you perform exceptionally well in these competitive exams then you might end up getting a job at Google. When we tried to reach these associates and ask them whether they have a college degree or not most of them have a degree So, we are not quite sure that many have a degree or not as the profile was not accessible.

In short, for now, you do need a college degree to get a job at Google or Equivalent experience.
Microsoft
In the case of Microsoft, we follow the same procedure to hunt down all the job openings they have and gather the requirement again in the case of Microsoft it was pretty simple that all of them required you to have a college degree. Also, I am not aware of any kind of competitions provided by Microsoft on yearly basis to hire new talents they rarely conduct some competitions however it is also not clear that after clearing a competition you need a college degree or not to get a job in Microsoft.
So for now it’s safe to say that to get a job in Microsoft you need to have a college degree with Experience.

IBM
In the case of IBM, we follow the same procedure, and long story short They also want you to have a college degree for all the roles.

Tesla:
Tesla is somewhat different when it comes to hiring developers. Since tesla is not hiring at a very large scale we came across only a few jobs and all of those roles required you to have a college degree but, here is a change!
Elon Musk recently announced that they are going to hire people without college degrees and only on a skilled basis. For now, we only have this much information and not how they are exactly going to hire for these roles.

Closing Words: All these companies(Except Telsa for now) required you to have a college degree or a minimum of 4-6yrs of experience. In the future, this may change or may not and we cannot predict that as well. You can have a degree in a different field and you can work in different fields that is a different thing but having a degree is a must for now.
